Yes, VHS tapes are a thing of the past, and very few people use them, however, it doesn’t mean they aren’t worth anything.

Like most things in life, almost everything has a value, yes, including VHS tapes, but, it’s only certain VHS tapes that can sell for cash, not all of them.  Generally, your banned movies or live events, such as concerts and wrestling, can sell for top dollar.  The same can be said about VHS that never made it to a DVD release.   It has to be something unique if you want more than a few dollars.  Most VHS tapes, however, sell for less than $2.

In today’s post, I wanted to let you know how you can sell your VHS tapes for top dollar.  Granted, it won’t be a lot, but it may be more than you’re expecting.  Of course, what you’re going to make will depend on which tapes you’re selling.

As always, I’m 100% honest and only recommend what works.  So, take a look at the many options below to see if one works for you.

Where Can I Sell VHS Tapes?

#1 eBay

Let’s start with the biggest name in the industry – eBay.

Honestly, if you want to sell your VHS tapes and don’t want to deal with someone face-to-face, then I highly recommend you consider eBay.  It’s easy to set up a listing and even easier to ship it out.  The great thing about eBay is that you can see what your VHS tape is sold for.  To do so, just search for what you have to sell and then filter out the results so that it only shows what recently sold.  In doing so, it will give you an idea as to how much your tape is worth.

Remember, not all tapes are worth a ton.  In fact, some may not be worth anything, so don’t be shocked if you see a $0 value.

#2 Amazon

Amazon is another platform to consider as they allow you to sell VHS tapes as well, giving you access to the millions who use Amazon daily.

I have read a lot of people have had some success selling VHS tapes here, but again, it will depend on which tapes you have to sell.

To start selling, you can start in three ways.  For one, you can type in the exact title you have and then look for the “Sell on Amazon” button located on the description or you can start an account by signing up via this Amazon’s Seller Central link.

Lastly, you can send in your tapes to Amazon directly using what’s known as the FBA service.  Amazon will fulfill your order and do all of the dirty work for you.  Of course, this will tack on more fees, but the biggest perk is that Prime members may be more motivated to buy your product since they can get faster shipping rates.

#3 Local Resellers

This one may work, but it’s going to depend on where you live, as this will determine how many resellers will be in your area.

What you will want to do is type in “sell VHS tapes near me” and see if the results yield anything.

If so, either call the reseller or look to see if there’s any information on their website as to what they are accepting.

Keep in mind that many places don’t purchase VHS tapes anymore, so you may find yourself out of luck.

#4 Facebook Marketplace

If you don’t mind meeting up with someone locally, then the Facebook Marketplace may be one to consider.  The great thing about this option is that it’s free and you’re using the power of Facebook.  The only downfall, however, is that you have to message people, trust these people, and usually meet up to sell these items.

Again, VHS tapes aren’t a hot commodity, but you can check eBay, as mentioned above, to see what your tapes are worth.  Then, take this value and set up a selling post to see if anyone is interested.  What I have found is that bulk lots, simply meaning you’re selling more than 5-10+ VHS tapes at once, tend to sell for much more.

#5 Facebook Groups

Touching on #4, you can also check out Facebook groups as well if you have a larger collection.  There are a lot of groups willing to at least look at your collection, but like most of the Facebook groups, you will have to find one that’s active.

Joining a group is free, but just make sure that you read the rules before posting as they all vary.  Some have rules stating you can’t sell, whereas others are quite lax.  Again, it just depends.

To find these groups, head to your Facebook profile and search for “sell VHS” or something along those lines in the search bar.  Then, filter out your results to only show groups to see what’s available at the time.

Nonetheless, it’s a way to post your collection and then work out a transaction if any members are interested.

#6 Yard Sale

And, lastly, consider throwing your VHS tapes out in the driveway if you have one coming up.  If all else fails, you never know who may want to buy them who lives near by.

If you find out that no one wants them and you exhausted all other options, then you may simply want to donate them as Goodwill does accept VHS donations.  The only question is what kind of tax write off can you get?

Final Thoughts

I’ll be honest.  VHS tapes won’t yield much unless you have some rare item or something that’s maybe signed.  Simply put, if it’s part of a collection and somebody wants it, then you may have some luck; however, if it’s a mediocre film with thousands in existence, then you may have to donate it because no one will probably want it.

As you probably already know, most people stream their movies today and don’t necessarily want to watch a VHS or let it collect dust.  Most are looking for something rare to add to their collection.  Again, that’s why I highly recommend you check out eBay to see what your tapes are selling for.  There are collectors out there, but I feel they are dwindling as the days go by.
