Legit Remote Data Entry Jobs (Part Time + Freelance)

Data entry is one of the million ways you can make money online.

These jobs do exist online and can often be an okay part-time job while working from home, but they can often be hard to find due to the demand.

Don’t expect to get rich working data entry-like jobs.  In fact, most of the companies I’m about to post only pay minimum wage, sometimes less!

In today’s post, I went ahead and researched some of the most popular companies almost always hiring remote data entry workers, either part time or full.  Do keep mind, however, that a lot of these companies aren’t always hiring, so don’t be too bummed if the job isn’t active when you check it out.

Toward the end, I will also list a bunch of great resources you can use to find even more opportunities.

As with any job hunt, the more you put into it, the more you can get out it.

Let’s begin!

What is Remote Data Entry?

Before I jump into the companies hiring, let’s first talk about what remote data entry is about.

In short, the tasks will vary, but for the most part, you’re transferring information from one source to another.

For example, on mTurk, you may find a job where you need to take the information from a written form and type it out, whereas another company may ask you to enter specific information as it comes into their inventory.

As long as you can read and type this information into a database, that’s pretty much all there is to it.

While many companies consider entry-level workers, some do ask for experience, but seeing the job only takes minutes to learn in most cases, many companies are willing to hire non-experience data entry-level workers.  Many companies also require that you take an entry test to test your skills as well.

NOTE:  If you want to see which companies are posting entry-level positions right now, I highly recommend you check out FlexJobs, one of the only online remote job search engine that screens all of its incoming jobs to ensure you’re only looking at legitimate opportunities.  A great way to find a remote job fast.

Remote Data Entry Jobs From Home

ajilon

I’m going to post a few staffing agencies here, but from my research and experience, I have found that these companies often have great remote opportunities.  You just need to be proactive and continue to search until you find a job of interest.

Seeing you have to use a job title to find a specific data entry job listing, I recommend you use terms such as “Data Entry Specialist, Payroll Data Entry Clerk, Order Entry Specialist” to see what comes up.

Remember, like most of the opportunities I’m about to list here, there won’t always be a job opening, so you may have to keep coming back to see what’s available.

Amazon Mechanical Turk (mTurk)

Arguably the most popular way to make money online, you’re not going to get rich working with mTurk, however, once you get how the system works, there’s no reason you can’t make at least $8 to $10+ per hour.

I have dabbled with mTurk in the past, and I do highly recommend you check out a few of these low-cost books (some free) to see how you can make money on the service.  You can also check out a few posts I have written as well:  how to make $50 a day on mTurk and how to find HITs worth Turking for.

In short, you get to pick the jobs you want, and most of them only take a few seconds, sometimes a minute or more to complete.  With a lot of data entry-like work on the platform, you can stay busy for an eternity if you wanted to.  The great thing about it is that these remote data entry jobs require no experience.

Joining is 100% free and you can work whenever you please.

Axion

Axion Data Entry Service does note that openings are rare, but when they do, they will contact you as long as you’re registered and you have experience.

If you’re lucky enough to get hired, all jobs are performed from home, with the average operator working up to 25 hours a week.

Jobs range from inputting information from applications to customer response cards.  The work did seem to be quite diverse and interesting, at least in data entry terms.

Since the turnover is quite low and it seems to be one of the best part-time data entry gigs, it doesn’t hurt to at least add your name to the database to be alerted in the case a job does pop up.

Cass Information Systems

Cass Information Systems, an integrated information management and payment services provider, often hires remote data entry, however, they are often based on your location since you need to pick up the work from a local office, it appears.

Reviews seem to be mixed on Indeed, with former entry data clerks giving the position an average of 3.4/5 rating.

Regardless, it’s another company to keep your eyes on.

To view current listings, follow the link below and look for “data entry” positions with an offsite location.

Clickworker

Clickworker really isn’t considered as a career starter, but rather, I look at it as a decent platform if you want to work when you want.

Like most of these crowdsourcing platforms I mention here, you won’t make much.  In fact, be prepared to make minimum wage, if that.  Most rookies make a few dollars an hour, but once you learn the ropes, this pay can greatly increase, I promise.

But, on the plus side, Clickworker almost always has data entry work available, keeping you busy as long as you want to work.

Aside from data entry work, Clickworker also offers other job opportunities such as proofreading, web research, app testing and so much more.

A great option if you don’t want to commit to anything in particular.

Dion Data Solutions

DionData Solutions, a Data Management Service Bureau with locations nationwide, frequently offers at-home data entry specialist positions.

And while the company didn’t have any openings, at least when I checked, they do accept applications throughout the year.

Yes, the company is 100% legitimate and they even provide all of the training and programs at NO cost to you.

If you don’t see them currently hiring, don’t get bummed just yet as they do open up their application portal throughout the year.

Freelance Websites

Most of the websites I list in my Fiverr alternatives will have tons of data entry work available, but you will have to bid on the jobs yourself.  It does take work, but it can pay off if you’re willing to work for lower wages at first.

For instance, on Upwork, as I write this, there were 100+ jobs available, while comparable companies had just as many jobs.  You won’t win them all, but I do recommend you start your bids low to at least build your profile statistics.

Then, once you earn enough reviews, clients will start to contact you as long as your reviews are good.

Just remember that you’re often competing against hundreds of other freelancers, so you may find it could take a while before you land your first gig.

Great American Opportunities

Reading some blog posts online, I have found that Great American Opportunities does hire data entry workers, but they don’t publicly post this information.  Instead, you will need to email the company to express your interest in a position.

Now, do keep in mind that if you do e-mail, a lot of people who have expressed interest often note that you are put on a waiting list, sometimes as long as six months long.

The job is said to pay up to $0.40 per form and you can log in and work as you please.

Seeing this is a fundraising company, there tends to be a busy season where most do their work, often from September to December.

Kelly Services

Kelly Services isn’t a company per se, but rather, another staffing agency.

And what I have found is that they often post some great remote working gigs, including remote data entry jobs.

Like the job search engines I’m about to post in a few here, you will want to make sure you use the right keywords to hopefully find a job in your area.

Keywords such as Data Entry Representative, Data Entry Clerk, Data Entry Operator I can all yield some results.  Just make sure you pay close attention to the job title to ensure that it’s a remote gig.

Kforce

Like Kelly Services, Kforce works in the same way, connecting you with companies in your area looking for data entry opportunities as well as just about anything else.

From contract gigs to permanent employment, use the free search tool to see if there’s anything local that’s of interest.

Yes, you will find a lot of jobs that aren’t remote, but I promise you that work at home data entry opportunities do exist.

Microworkers

Just like Clickworkers and mTurk, Microworkers works in the same way, allowing you to work as you please.   There are no schedules and you can pick and choose any job of interest.

Out of all the crowdsourcing-like websites, I would say Microworkers doesn’t offer as many jobs, however, from my research, there seems to be data entry work readily available as well as other types of jobs.

Joining Microworkers is 100% free and you could be working in as little as 24 hours once approved.  Again, don’t expect to get rich with this opportunity or even view it as a full-time gig.

Robert Half

Another staffing agency website, but I did see quite a few data entry jobs available.

While a lot of these jobs were in house, I did notice some remote opportunities.  Again, make sure you read the description as to what’s expected from you.

The Smart Crowd

The Smart Crowd works a lot like mTurk, as mentioned above, wherein you can work at your own pace.

Known as a crowdsourcing company, data entry jobs are aplenty on the website, but you can find other jobs as well, including typing and data tagging jobs, to name a few.

The company does hire worldwide, but they do break down candidates into two categories.  One is designed for United States applicants, whereas the second group is designed for those who live outside of the United States.

As long as you have a good internet connection, you can join right now and start working as soon as your application is approved.  Since you work at your own pace, plan on making minimum wage, if that.

Smart Locating

Smart Locating appears to be a wonderful choice if you’re looking to start your career at home.

A company known for making it easy for their clients to find an apartment, they often need people like you to collect information about various apartments across the United States.

The job isn’t always readily available, but I do recommend, like a lot of these companies I mention, that you check in weekly to see if there are any openings.

Working Solutions

Working Solutions generally hires customer service representatives who want to work from home, however, you can find remote data entry jobs on occasion.

Jobs are open to all U.S. residents, so be sure to keep an eye on the active listings via the link below.

Xerox

Xerox often hires data entry specialists who want to work from home, but they also offer a variety of other positions as well.

Coming from a massive corporation, it does appear the job offers benefits and consistent hours.

Some jobs are remote, but they are limited to certain states, so just make sure you read the job description in detail before applying.

Follow the official careers link below for the most recent data entry jobs.

Remote Data Entry Job Search Engines

FlexJobs

I recommended the company at the beginning of this post and I will recommend them again.

For the cost of a lunch, you can browse thousands of screened remote jobs in virtually any category, yes, including data entry.

As I write this, for instance, it appeared as if the company added three to 10 data entry jobs a day.  Some were available nationwide, while others were state specific.  Regardless, a fantastic choice if you want to browse legitimate remote jobs all in one place.

Craigslist

Your local Craigslist jobs section could yield some results, especially jobs that are local to you.

While there are a lot of remote data entry jobs, some companies do require that you check into an office every once in a while, simply meaning they only hire local candidates.

Like all of these job search options, use simple keywords while searching to see if anything is of interest.

Glassdoor

Glassdoor is yet another great option as you can research the company’s reputation before you even apply.

Like many of these websites, Glassdoor also has a search engine, but the thing I like about it is that you can sort by salary, distance, etc.  Plus, as mentioned, all company reviews come from previous and current employees, making it easy to see which companies you avoid and/or trust.

Again, make sure you use the right keywords and comb through the description before applying because non-remote jobs often show up when they shouldn’t.

Indeed

Indeed is probably my favorite search portal for just about any job opportunity.

Combing through thousands of third-party websites, Indeed takes all of this information and throws it up all in one spot.

While Indeed focuses on all jobs, you can search for remote data entry jobs as well.  Simply use basic keywords, such as “remote data entry” and see what comes up.

For instance, when I did it, I was able to browse through more than 3,000 jobs!  You can also set up alerts if you want the jobs to come to you.

LinkedIn

Yes, LinkedIn is used for more than just networking with others.

Equipped with a pretty good job search engine, it’s yet another option to consider if you want to find a company nearby hiring remote data entry workers.

When I was writing this, LinkedIn had about 3,000+ jobs, but out of all of these options, I had to weed through a lot of jobs that weren’t related, so do keep that in mind.

If you have a LinkedIn profile, make sure you’re logged in as many companies offer the “Easy Apply” feature, making it that much easier to apply for the job.

ZipRecruiter

At first glance, ZipRecruiter appeared to have more jobs than Indeed, almost six thousand more.

Working just like Indeed, use specific keywords as the company uses the same strategies, pulling job postings from thousands of websites.

ZipRecruiter is 100% free to use.  If using, just make sure you read the job description in detail as a lot of non-remote jobs often slip through the cracks.

Remote.co

Remote.co is a pretty straightforward website that focuses on remote jobs only, just as the domain name implies.

Focusing on all remote jobs, you can narrow down your choice to data entry only jobs if you choose.

There won’t be as many jobs here in comparison to the other job sites, but it’s one to at least check out, seeing it’s free.

Equipment Required

In most cases, a company will just ask that you have a reliable high-speed internet connection and computer, of course.  A quiet workplace to focus can be a plus, too.

But, depending on the setup and the company works, dual monitors are highly recommended as it will prevent you from clicking from tab to tab.  Upgrading to a dual monitor setup often will cost you less than $100 and can increase your work productivity by more than 30%, easily.

How Much Can I Earn?

Keep in mind that while there are data entry remote jobs, the pay is very low.

In fact, even if you find a part-time job, don’t expect to make more than minimum wage.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes the average hourly wage is $14 per hour, for instance.

As mentioned, these jobs are extremely easy to learn and to a company, they probably view you as being replaceable 99% of the time, the main reason for the low pay.

If you plan on working with mTurk or Clickworker, then your payout will greatly depend on how fast you can work.  Efficient mTurkers can earn $10+ per hour, while those just starting out can barely hit $4 an hour.  So, in this case, you can expect even less.

Again, don’t be surprised if this job doesn’t pay the bills.

It’s going to be tough.

Instead, I just recommend a data entry job as a way to supplement your household income.

Avoid the Scams

  • don’t fall for the companies that state you will get rich and/or make a lot of money — not happening!
  • all legitimate job postings should have contact information and the skills required of you, even if they are basic
  • never pay a fee as you’re applying for a job, not a product
  • research the company’s name for more information and to see what others are saying online

Final Thoughts

Data entry jobs are commonly available, oftentimes via companies that I didn’t mention here, the main reason why I included those third-party job search tools as this is where you will find most jobs.

As long as you have the mindset that you won’t rich nor will it turn into a lucrative full-time job, it’s safe to say you can at least earn a few hundred dollars a month if you work a few days a week.

Personally, if I liked data entry work, I probably would stick to mTurk, at least attempting to find the companies that post jobs that pay me the most for my time.  That way, I could work whenever I wanted, at my own pace.

This is hard, however.

But, if you really wanted to make money and don’t mind hustling, then Upwork and Freelancer.com, for example, could be another great choice to build a client base.  In the beginning, work a few low-paying jobs to at least build a highly reviewed profile.  Then, once you have a few jobs under your belt and your reviews are good, then you may find clients contacting you instead of you having to contact them.

For now, let me know if I’m missing any data entry companies and/or you want to comment on their reputation.  And, as always, you’re more than welcome to comment below.  I’d love to hear your thoughts!
