Averbach Transcription Review: Higher Paying Option?

There’s no doubt that there are a ton of transcription companies online, in which you can work remotely as a freelancer.  These jobs are often a great opportunity as long as you can type fast and you’re accurate.

With so many companies out there, some good, some bad, I’m doing my best to review as many as I can.  I’m a one-man show in most cases, so you do have to bear with me.

In today’s review, I wanted to talk about Averbach Transcription.  It’s a company someone asked me about via email and I didn’t know much about it.  As always, I’m curious, so I figured I would dive deep and see what this company is about.

Is it legit?

Is it worth your time?

We’re about to find out.

As in all of my reviews, I’m always 110% honest, only promoting what I feel is worth your time.  You won’t find garbage products I promote nor will you find 50+ ads bombarding the page. I just don’t work that way.

So, with that being said, let’s dive in and see if Averbach Transcription is worth your time.

Averbach Transcription Review

What is Averbach Transcription?

At first glance, I couldn’t find much on the company’s official website.  It was very basic, and it wasn’t as detailed as the many competitors out there.  This doesn’t mean it’s a scam, however.

According to the company’s website, it’s a “high-quality service” that delivers “high-quality transcripts on time under pressure.”   To get started as a client, it’s as simple as clicking on the “get started with an account” button and creating an account.  From there, you can upload your files and get a quote to have it transcribed.  Let me just say that it was different than most transcription companies I have reviewed.

Via their LinkedIn page, however, I did see that they are based in New York, New York at 228 Park Avenue, Suite #1000, founded by Zev Averbach.  They have 1-10 employees and four employees were connected to them at the time of this publishing.

The company notes that it’s 100% based in the USA, only using native English speakers.

Averbach Transcription Requirements

If you’re interested in working with the company, it appears they are always looking for skilled transcribers to join the team.

In order to qualify, they ask that you meet the following requirements:

  • Pay attention to detail
  • Proficient in English language, both written and spoken
  • Be punctual
  • Work independently
  • Communicate via email
  • Pass a skills test
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Use Express Scribe or software of choice to upload your finalized work
  • Have PayPal account

They don’t ask for experience nor do they ask that you type a minimum amount.  However, like the many transcription companies I have talked about before, they do ask that you pass a skills test before you’re considered.

Skills Test

Before you can apply, they do ask that you pass a skills test, which will be a brief, five-minute piece of audio you will listen to.  This will test your ability to dissect accents, difficult audio as well as research tough situations.  You will have up to 20 minutes to complete it.

To take the test, you will need transcription software, but they recommend Express Scribe, a free version.  It’s highly recommended you play around with the software before proceeding to ensure you know how to use it.  And, if you’re concerned about the test, you can take a practice quiz before proceeding to know what’s expected before you take the actual test.

After you take the test, they will contact you via email if you pass.

The Work

Like most transcription platforms, you will be considered a freelancer, which means you can work whenever you please.  It’s as flexible as it comes.

On the platform, a client will submit an audio file, which is then available to the team on a first-come, first-serve basis.  You can accept or deny any project you see fits.  If you accept it, then you will need to submit the file by the deadline, which can be in as little as a few hours.

After completion, it’s submitted to the team for review.  And, as mentioned, the company holds its work to a very high standard, which means your work will always be reviewed for perfection.  In the case your work doesn’t meet these requirements, then you could face penalties or worst case, termination.

How Much Does Averbach Transcription Pay?

Directly on the company’s page, they note that pay ranges from $1 per audio minute for “normal” files to $1.50 per audio minute for same-day or overnight files.  This computes to $60 to $90 per audio hour or about $15 to $30 per hour, depending on how fast you type.  Remember, you won’t make this per minute; rather, it’s per transcribed minute.  The faster you type, the more you can make.  This can be said about any transcription company.

This rate is quite good in comparison to a lot of transcription companies online.  I have found that many pay almost half of this, which means in some cases, you can barely make minimum wage.

All payments are made via PayPal, and again, there’s no minimum as to how much you have to work.  It’s as flexible as it can be.

Final Thoughts

6/10Averbach Transcription seems like a great online transcription company, however, I don’t know how busy they will keep you in comparison to the hundreds of other transcription sites out there.   Remember, what’s presented to us is quite basic. However, seeing you can work whenever you please, why not at least sign up and see if you get accepted?  That way, you can log in at your leisure and work a job if you have the time.  After all, the payout rate seems to be quite competitive.

In the end, Averbach Transcription is a legitimate organization with a physical presence.  There’s no worry here.  The only concern, as mentioned, is how much work can you get.  Other than that, they seem to care about their clients in providing accurate work, so this means they are only going to hire the best.  As long as you can pass that skills test, then you have a chance at thriving within the organization.

That’s going to do it for now.
