31+ Live Chat Operator Jobs from Home

Some of the links may be from a sponsor. Advertising Disclosure

If you’re looking for a legitimate job where you can work from home, you don’t have to look far, as there are plenty.

In today’s guide, I wanted to talk about a very popular work-from-home gig — chat operator jobs.  This is a job as it sounds. You chat with customers, either over the phone or via a chat box, to resolve any inquiries they may have.

That being said, you need to know that even if this is not a phone job 99% of the time, it doesn’t mean that everything will go smoothly. While it may appear to be a stress-free choice of work, you will still be required to put in 100% of your attention. The reason is that there are instances when you will have to deal with multiple chats at a single time.

If you like the idea of working from home and interacting with the public in a way, then this job could be for you.  Let’s find out!

What Does a Chat Operator Do?

A live chat operator’s job is to respond in a timely manner to inquiries from clients and prospective customers regarding a product or a service provided by a company. This instantaneous interaction online is a chat operator’s main responsibility; however, the operator may also have various other tasks to complete, and this would be dependent on their location.

The tasks that live chat agents need to perform are primarily dependent on what the companies and clients need. Most often, a combination of these tasks are required:

  • Customer support
  • Sales agent
  • Virtual assistant
  • Technical support
  • Email support

Simply put, you will chat with a customer as you would any instant messenger, often using a script, to figure out a solution to a problem.

What Do I Need to Get a Chat Operator Job?

In order for you to land a live chat operator position, you may need to possess a background in customer service, have superior typing abilities, and a high school diploma in the least or GED as these requirements are what most companies look for in applicants for chat operator positions.  All job requirements vary, but like any job posting, you will know what’s expected of you before you apply.

There are several qualities that will give you better chances of getting a live chat agent position.  This can include…

  • A minimum of 40 wpm (words per minute) with high accuracy
  • Near-native skills in English or in other specified languages
  • Superior grammar and punctuation
  • Ability to remain mentally sharp even in high-pressure situations or environment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Outstanding multitasking abilities
  • Punctually follows assigned remote schedules
  • Can acclimatize to various circumstances without difficulty

What is the Salary of a Chat Operator?

A live chat operator can earn about $10 to $25 an hour.  How much you make can depend on where you apply to as well as what your salary setup looks like.  For example, some companies may offer a commission, whereas some will strictly pay you by the hour, no matter how much you work.  Some may pay you by the minutes you talk.  It all varies, but this seems to be an hourly range to consider.

Can I Find Work as a Live Chat Agent Even if I’m Not in the U.S.?

The job of a remote live chat operator can be done just about anywhere in the world, so your geographical location is not an issue for many companies. Most firms that hire live chat operators will typically require mainly language fluency. Even so, there are some organizations that will require you to be based in the US. or any specific location they need you to be in.

What Benefits Will I Enjoy as a Live Chat Operator?

There are different factors that will affect the type of benefits you will get. These include the following:

  • The number of hours you put in daily
  • If you’re an independent contractor
  • If you’re a regular employee or
  • If you’re on probation

Besides paid overtime, live chat agents who are independent contractors normally have no benefits. In contrast, operators who are regular and full-time employees are usually entitled to more benefits. Among these are, paid-time offs, health insurance, holidays, parental leave, and 401k, to mention some.  This is rare, however.

Is There a Fixed Number of Working Hours in a Week?

The time you spend weekly working as a live chat operator will depend on the project assigned to you or the company that hired you. In many cases, the job posting will specify the number of hours that you’re required to work.

Many companies offer a flexible schedule, so you can decide whether to work as little or as much as you prefer. A company may indicate that you need to work for 10 to 20 hours each week if you’re on a part-time arrangement. They may also expect that you render a minimum of 40 hours each week if you’re hired full-time. In other instances, your client or the company you work for may specify a maximum number of hours that you need to render in a week.

Do I Need to Graduate From College To Land a Live Chat Operator Job?

A lot of companies who hire live chat operators are not so strict when it comes to the educational achievement of their employees. They typically have the most basic requirement, which is a high school education or a GED equivalent. There are others, however, who will hire someone who has a bachelor’s degree or an individual with a customer service background.  This isn’t that common, however.

In the event that you’re looking to work as a technical support agent, then you may have brighter prospects if you’re holding a computer science diploma. You may also find that a bachelor’s degree, a medical license, or relevant experience will likely land you a legal or medical account.

If you don’t have a college degree, it doesn’t matter as 99% of these jobs don’t require one.
