Trymata, formerly known as TryMyUI, is a usability testing service that helps website/app owners improve their usability.  According to the company, its goal is to make the web easier for everyone by allowing designers and coders to see the obstacles that people run into.

If you like the idea of testing someone else’s website/app, speaking your thought aloud, and getting paid for it, Trymata may be something to consider as the company is almost always hiring testers.

You’re not going to get rich doing it, but it could bring in a few dollars on the side.

In today’s review, I wanted to check out Trymata to see if it’s worth your time.  I will explore how you can sign up, what you can make as well as what other people think of it.  As always in all of my reviews, I only recommend what I feel is beneficial to your wallet.

With that out of the way, let’s dive in and see what TryMyUI is all about.

What is TryMyUI?

Simply put, Trymata will pay you to test a website or app.  It will be your duty to use the website/app in real-time and then provide your feedback as you’re playing around via a screen recording and microphone.  As you wrap up, you will then provide written feedback as to what you thought about what you just experienced, both good and bad.  The company pays a flat $10 per test, and each test usually lasts about 20 minutes on average.

If you’re not familiar with the process, developers will turn to someone like you to how you interact as well as what they can change on the platform.  In business, it’s always great to get more than one opinion, right?

Trymata is operated by its parent organization, Survey Analytics, which is a suite of interconnected and easy-to-use information collection and analysis tools, including online surveys, mobile data collection, advanced analytics.  It was founded in 2010, designed as a way to improve your design, online store, blog, etc.

How to Sign up for TryMyUI

To get started with Trymata, the process is relatively simple on the main site as all they ask from you to start is your name, PayPal address as well as a password.

In providing this information, you will then have to fill out a short demographic questionnaire, most of which asks for your education level, income, etc.  It’s similar to that of a survey profile if you have ever signed up for a survey site before.

After you fill out your demographic profile and confirm your email, you will then have to take a sample test to get into the system.  Don’t worry as it isn’t as hard as it sounds.  Just be natural and read your thoughts as you go about.

It’s 100% free to join.

Qualification Test

During the qualification test, you will have to read the instructions out loud, all while completing all of the tasks on your screen.  The website will let you know exactly what’s expected of you before you begin the test, so it’s highly recommended that you read through it if you’re serious about getting approved.  Failing to do so can result in a rejection, preventing you from making money on the platform.

Before you can start, however, you will need to download the special Trymata recorder, which will allow them to record your voice and screen as you complete the task.  This recorder will be necessary as you complete tests in the future.

When I took the qualification test, it was a one-minute video, and I was asked to complete a series of tasks, such as what I thought of the theme as well as to find a certain item.  As I did this, I would need to speak my thought out loud as I moved around the website.

You won’t get paid for the qualification test, but if you do pass, you can proceed to take tests as they appear on your dashboard.

After you complete your qualification test, it can take up to 24 to 48 hours to hear back.  Watch your email as this is where your results come in.

Trymata Tests

If you get approved after taking the qualification test, congrats.  Now, you will be able to log in and take tests as you please.

What I recommend is that you add the Trymata email to your email filters so that you can be on the lookout whenever an alert comes in.  Like surveys and many job sites, these jobs don’t last long and will go fast if you’re not quick enough.  Tests are not guaranteed nor are you qualified to take them just like a survey.  Whenever you want to take a usability test, the company will ask you a few screener questions first to see if you’re fit for the job.

For instance, if you’re a 30-year-old male, a web designer may not want you if he’s selling women’s clothing.

Most of these tests will have about four questions you need to answer, all of which are created by the client.  So, some clients may ask for more detailed answers while others may ask for a simple answer.  It just depends on who you work with.

TryMyUI Pay

Trymata pays a flat $10 per test, no matter which test you take.  On average, every test takes about 20 minutes to complete, and no matter how long it takes you, the company will pay you the same.  This is subject to change, however.

Now, keep in mind that a client will rate you after you submit a test.  In the case the client rates you poorly, meaning you get a two star or less, the company will allow them to resubmit that test at no charge.  What this then means for you is that you won’t get paid, so it’s very important that you follow the rules to ensure you get paid.

Once you build a balance, payments are sent out every Friday, with most of your tests, even if completed near the deadline, being counted for payout.  The nice thing about TryMyUI is that you can get paid in days once your tests are approved.

The Pros and Cons

As in all of my reviews, I scour the internet to see what past and present users say about the platform, breaking down both the good and bad.  Below, I briefly note the pros and cons I found online.

The Pros

• 100% free to join
• work whenever you want
• pay is weekly
• flat $10 a test (decent pay for work you do)
• no minimum cash out requirement

The Cons

• some people may not see a lot of tests
• getting paid after a test isn’t guaranteed (remember, if you’re rated low, your test is denied)
• have to download software
• Reddit users found them to be frustrating

Final Thoughts

As long as you don’t mind speaking your thoughts out loud while browsing a website/app, then, sure, it can work for you.  Don’t expect to get rich using this platform, but I can feel you can make $10 to $40~ a week.  How much you make will greatly depend on how many test invites you receive as well as how many you complete.  That’s what?  Up to $160~ a month?  That’s not too bad for a side gig, right?
