If you’re looking for a side hustle, tutoring is one I have mentioned plenty of times, such as in my best online tutoring jobs and gig economy jobs that pay big posts. Generally, as long as you have a degree and are competent in the subject you’re looking to tutor in, it’s a wonderful way to make $20+ per hour, sometimes much more.
One such company in the online tutoring industry is WyzAnt, a digital marketplace of sorts, founded in 2005. It’s a marketplace that was designed to connect students to independent tutors and is the first of its kind, fully dedicated to helping bring students together, both online and in person.
So, if you’re researching WyzAnt more in depth or you’re looking for an online tutoring option, let’s jump in and see if this platform is worth your time.
What is WzyAnt?
WzyAnt was founded in 2005 and is currently headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Picture it almost like a community of tutors and students, acting as a marketplace of sorts, connecting the two. Whether you want to make money as a freelance tutor or you need a math tutor nearby, they can help. The unique thing about this platform, unlike many, is that tutors are free to work whenever they want and don’t have to succumb to a schedule. It’s as flexible as they come.
To date, they have tutors in more than 250+ subjects and offer both in-person and online tutoring options. Every month, millions of tutors visit the website to find help, which means a lot of potential clients for you. Tutors have earned more than $64,000,000.
How to Become a Tutor With WyzAnt
If you’re interested in becoming a tutor with WyzAnt, you will have to follow six simple steps to get started. And, to qualify, all they ask is that you’re passionate about helping students excel academically and be at least 18+ years old, residing in the United States. A social security number is required, however, you do not have to be a certified teacher to be accepted.
Select your subject
The first step, much like most of these platforms, is they will want to know which subjects you’re interested in teaching. You can choose as many subjects as you’d like, however, you will have to complete a brief proficient quiz or submit your written qualifications. This will depend on the subject you’re applying to. Keep in mind that you will only be able to complete the quiz one time, so make sure you have adequate testing arrangements as well as a stable internet connection. According to the FAQ, most quizzes are about 8 to 20 questions long and won’t last longer than 30 minutes. Upon completion, you will receive real-time results and grants you the ability to list that subject on your profile immediately.
See how it works
Next, just like this review, WyzAnt will want to let you know how the platform works. They will walk you through some quick points, such as how your profile works as well as how you can set up appointments with your students. Since you are deemed an independent contractor, you are in charge of your tutoring business. This means you have full control in when you want to be available as well as who you want to work with. They will also let you know how you can find students as well as how they can find you.
Basic information and personalizing your profile
After you answer some questions in regards to how the platform works, they will then ask you to fill out your basic information. This will include your education, your hourly rate as well as your location. If you plan on traveling to a student, then they will want to know how far you’re willing to travel.
Personalize your profile
And, finally, after filling out your basic information form, you will then create a profile. This is what students will see if they are interested in hiring you. On this profile, you will add a profile headline, a photo as well as a short bio and your qualified subjects. Remember, this is what’s going to sell you so make sure that take your time in filling it out. WzyAnt does a great job offering various examples to show you how other tutors are succeeding as well as what their profile looks like.
The remaining two steps require you to accept the terms and then confirm your email.
Getting Approved
After you finish the six steps prior, your application will then go into the pending stage and it can take up to 48 hours to get approved.
If your application was denied, then it’s usually due to one of the following reasons:
- insufficient information
- grammar/formatting issues
- submitted a resume/cover letter instead of using the free response
The company uses many factors when evaluating, so not all tutors are accepted.
Finding Jobs
Once you’re approved to work on the platform, you can find jobs on the platform in one of two ways.
For one, you can search the tutoring job boards and message students if you feel you’re qualified for the job.
So, for example, that particular student on the job board was looking for help for their Stat 1 class. If you feel you can help them with this particular project, then you can click on the “show details” as to when that student is available as well as what they expect from you. If you like what you see, then you can apply for the job and wait for the student to respond.
Aside from viewing the job board, students can also find you via a search portal. In this search, they find your profile and then view it in detail to see if you’re a good fit. If so, they will then message you with a proposal, in which you can deny or accept.
To show higher up in the search, the company recommends that you record more hours on the platform and respond within 24 hours. Also, the higher your ratings are, the more likely you will show whenever searches for a subject you’re competent in.
How Much Do You Make With WyzAnt?
Since you’re an independent contractor, you get to choose your rates.
During the registration process, you will get to decide what you want to charge per hour. Whether it’s $5 or $500, it’s up to you, but remember, you will have to be competitive with other tutors who have similar qualifications. The sweet spot, however, seems to be in the $21 to $37 per hour range. This rate greatly varies on the subject you want to help with as some are more in demand than others.
WyzAnt pays you 75% of your rate for each lesson, retaining a 25% commission fee. This is standard on platforms such as these. And, again, since you’re independent, you will be responsible for your own taxes. This is subject to change as the company has played around with this rate in the past, so be sure to confirm with the company’s FAQ before signing up.
Payment
All payments are issued via direct deposit, and this seems to be the only option at the moment.
You can choose either a bimonthly payment or an express deposit, which allows you to receive your funds five days following a completed lesson.
The Pros
As long as you get approved, you can list your profile and wait for students. There are no fees to stay active. It’s 100% free to join.
You get to set your rates and schedule. Since you’re an independent contractor, you call the shots.
Both in-person and online tutoring options are available.
It’s a hands-off approach. Just complete your profile and wait for offers or use the job board to find leads.
Solid ratings online (4.0 on Indeed and 4/5 on Glassdoor)
Great customer service, according to current tutors.
It’s very easy to get started. All you need to do is set up a profile, choose your subjects and take a proficiency test.
The Cons
There’s a lot of competition, so you will have to stand out above the rest, whether it’s marketing aggressively or offering below-average rates.
Not everyone is approved, even if you feel you have the qualifications.
In some subjects, there aren’t a lot of jobs.
Once you fail a proficiency exam, you can never retake it.
Final Thoughts
9/10If you want to tutor online and feel you have the qualifications to do so, then I would highly recommend you put WyzAnt high on your list. There’s a reason you see the name pop up whenever you search for an online tutoring opportunity. I don’t see why you can’t at least make $20+ per hour, even more, if you have rare qualifications.
The great thing about it is that it’s 100% free to join and you can work whenever you want. Plus, the company has a very reputable history, so you know you’re working with one you can trust. Worst case, if you find out it’s not what you want, you can always cancel your account.
For now, at least take action and complete your profile. It doesn’t take that long and you could get started in as little as 24 hours. It’s much quicker than you think.
As always, if you want to talk about the platform, whether it’s good or bad, you’re more than welcome to do so in the comments section below.
