Seeing online transcription is one of the more popular ways to earn money online, there are a lot of scams and opportunities that pay you peanuts.

This is the reason I like writing these reviews.  I help you determine if it’s worth your time, what you can make as well as what other people think.  As always, I only recommend products/services I would use and I would never mislead you.  I just don’t work that way.

Whether you’re researching transcription jobs and came across the Allegis Transcription name or you’re looking for additional ways to make money online, particularly in the transcription world, then let’s see what this company is all about.

What Is Allegis Transcription?

According to the official Allegis Transcription website, they are said to be the “trusted leader in recorded transcription and supporting online services for large and small businesses.”  They have been in business for more than 24+ years, distinguishing themselves in three ways:  capacity, security, and flexibility.  These three areas are said to set them apart from the competition.  In looking at the official job description, it appears that they work through large, long-term contracts, which means a lot of work to provide to you.  They also work with some of the biggest companies in the world, which means a lot of stability.

Like most online transcription companies, they work with many types of businesses.  In this case, it’s the insurance and legal industries.  Whether it’s a recorded meeting or a transcript, the company offers several flexible turnaround times, from as little as four hours to the standard four day window.

There’s no doubt this transcription company is legit, but the true question is if it’s worth it’s joining?  We’re about to find out.

Is it a Scam?

Absolutely not.

Allegis Transcription has been in the industry for decades and continues to grow to this day.  They work with many prominent brands, many of which I am sure you have heard of.  You can also search the third-party reviews online to see that people have made money with them.  While legitimate companies can have a bad reputation, it’s not to be confused with the word “scam.”  While many “work-from-home” opportunities can feel like a scam at times, this isn’t the case with this company and should not be lumped in with them.

Yes, you can make money transcribing online, and yes, Allegis can help you.

Applying for an Allegis Transcription Job

If you want to apply as a transcriptionist with Allegis, you can see if they are hiring via the transcription jobs link on the official website.  On this page, you will be able to see the current openings as well as what’s expected of you as an applicant.  Almost always, the company has a transcription job opening, but it doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee if you apply as they do have some guidelines.

During the registration process, they will ask you to fill out an application, upload your resume and then answer some questions in detail to determine if you have the experience and availability to work with them.  In this questionnaire, they will ask you about your computer setup, any transcription experience you may have as well as how fast you can type.

They also want to know what kind of hours you want to work, specifically asking you if you’re able to invest at least two hours a day, including 24 hour assignment turnaround, and 1-2 coaching calls during specific hours for a special onboarding session.  There are no right or wrong answers, per se, but if you state you can’t work enough or they don’t feel you have enough experience, they may not invite you to the final testing stage.

Aside from the questionnaire, you will also need to take a few quizzes, one of which is a multiple-choice grammar quiz.  A passing score on this one is required to move onto the final sample test, which is a sample of your transcription and proofreading skills.  This final product is uploaded for review, and applicants who produces the highest quality samples will be interviewed.

By chance, if you do fail, you can apply again in the future, but it appears you will have to start the entire process over again.  You can do so after your 90 days expire.

Let it be known that if you are interested in working with Allegis, you will be treated as an independent contractor, which means you legally get to work whenever you please.  However, according to the job description, there is a per-week minimum that must be met.  This is said to be a 100-page minimum a week.  This sounds like a lot, but it doesn’t take as long as you think. This is the case with almost all transcription companies online, and Allegis is no exception.

After applying, the time frame to hear back greatly depends on how many people applied at the moment, but from what I read, it can take less than two weeks.

Qualifications

Of course, with any job, there are qualifications to think about.  And, to work with Allegis, they ask that you meet the following requirements:

• must reside in the U.S. (no exceptions)
• fast and accurate typing (at least 75+ WPM, according to applicants)
• excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills
• responding well to feedback
• reliability meeting deadlines
• ability to meet per-week production minimums
• up-to-date PC (Windows 8+) and Word 2013+
• high-speed internet connection
• foot pedal and headset

The requirements aren’t much, as you can see.  They do require that you can type fast as well as pay attention to detail, but nowhere does it say you have to have experience.  This can be a plus for anyone who feels they can type at least 50+ words per minute and wants to get started in the industry.

How Much Does Allegis Transcription Pay?

If you pay close attention to the website, you will find out that Allegis does not tell you how much you make.  But, there’s a reason for this, and it’s because your pay is based on the client you’re working with.  Speed can play a role as well since the more you can type in the hour, the more you can make.  This can be said about any online transcription job.

According to one Reddit post I had found, one applicant said you can expect to make $11+ an hour if you can type 75+ WPM or up to $15 to $20+ per hour if you can type faster than 100+.  Over time, as you get used to the formatting and macros, your hourly rate can increase.

While the company doesn’t come out and say how much you can make, I did find some salaries online via third-party reviews.  And, according to these reports, it appeared the sweet spot was in the $11-$20 per hour range.  Again, it greatly depends on how fast you can type as well as who you’re working with.

The Reviews

So, what are other people saying online?

In looking at third-party reviews, previous transcriptionists gave the company a 3.9/5 on Indeed and a 3.6/5 on Glassdoor.  This isn’t bad, but it’s not great, either.  With any online company, I try to look for ratings that are 4+, but it isn’t necessary.

On Indeed, people complained about the schedule restrictions, stating they demand a 24-hour turnaround.

On the plus side, many did like that they could control how much they worked as long as you met those minimums. The system seemed to be optimized for those who want full-time work, but it appeared there was always a load of work.

On Glassdoor, reviewers liked the flexibility, but they didn’t like the lower-than-average pay.

It was a mixed-bag when I took a look at these reviews.  Some people really liked it, whereas others said it was a poor experience.  seeing most people head online to post a negative experience rather than a positive one, I would say, at least by reading these, that the company is one of the better online transcription services.

Final Thoughts

8/10If you’re looking for a reputable online transcription company, Allegis is one to put high on your list.  They work with many prominent clients and have a strict interviewing process and qualifications, which goes to show you that they only want to work with the best.

There’s not much to hate with the company, only with the exception that they do force minimums on you weekly.  This can be a bummer to some if you’re looking to truly work whenever you please.  While this can be a downfall to some, it may not be to you if you’re looking for a part-time job.  I did read that they allow you to skip weeks throughout the year, so that may be able to help in some cases.

If you can type fast, at least 75+ WPM, then you should be able to easily earn $10+ per hour, sometimes much more.  Only you can determine what you can make as it greatly depends on your speed.

For now, start the application process now as it can take a week or so before you hear back.  If you do, that’s a good sign.  Just pass the grammar quiz and transcription test to get in.  Once you do, this can make for a very nice way to supplement your income.
