I have mentioned FlexJobs quite a few times on this site, particularly in my how to make $100 fast and in my best entry-level work from home posts.

In short, it’s a premium job portal that helps you find legitimate jobs where you can work from home.  I emphasize legitimate because, sadly, there are so many scams out there, it’s hard to know what’s honest and what’s not when looking for an online gig.

No matter what kind of experience you have, whether you’re a professional with 20 years or someone just entering the workforce, they can hopefully find you a gig that requires no transportation.

Seeing it’s a pretty big company, I figured it was time to see if it’s worth the monthly fee and if it’s worth joining.  If you’re looking for any sort of at-home gig, then let’s take a look at if FlexJobs is for you.

FlexJobs Review

What is FlexJobs?

FlexJobs was founded in 2007 and is a subscription service that costs $14.95 a month (cheaper if you subscribe annually) by Sara Sutton Fell.  At the time, Sara was frustrated with her own job search and wanted to start an online job portal that solve that frustration, which brings you to where FlexJobs stands today.

It was designed to help you find any sort of telecommunication job, whether it be a freelance gig or even a full-time opportunity for your professional career.  The company insists on charging the monthly fee so that they can help weed out the garbage you find on so many free sites and keep it updated daily with the hundreds of jobs added every single day.  According to the company, they invest more than 166 hours every day in researching the jobs posted on the website.  So, your money is pretty much paying to have their staff hand-screen every job that pops up on the website as well as research the company behind the ad.

According to the company, there are more than 25,000+ jobs from more than 5,000 hand-screened companies.  There are no scams, no “good to be true” business opportunities nor will you find an unethical job that won’t pay you.

Is FlexJobs Legit?

Yes, FlexJobs is 100%, without a doubt, legitimate.  You won’t find any scams on this website nor will you find any unethical billing practices.  With a solid A+ BBB rating, you can be assured that you’re working with an honest company.

How Much Does It Cost?

Yes, FlexJobs does cost money, but I can promise you that you will receive many more benefits than your traditional job search portal such as Indeed.  I will mention these benefits next.

Depending on how long you subscribe for, a monthly subscription can cost $14.95 a month, whereas an annual subscription can cost $49.95 in total, a 72% savings.  In that case, it’s only $4 a month!  In some cases, it could be cheaper if you had a FlexJobs promo code.

In some cases, they may offer a one-week trial run as well, which can cost less than $7 a month.  It’s up to you as to how long you want to use it, but like most subscription services, the longer you subscribe, the more you can save.

The best thing about the company is that they offer a satisfaction guarantee in case you’re not satisfied with the quality of service.  Simply request a refund within 30 days of creating a subscription and they will refund you promptly.  It’s as easy as that.

What Are the Benefits?

Most job portals online are free, I get that.  So, you may be wondering, “Why should I pay when I can find these jobs elsewhere?”

That’s true to an extent, however, FlexJobs can offer you the following, something many of your free job portals can’t…

It’s Faster

Sure, you can find remote jobs on other websites, but the problem is that these websites do a poor job of weeding out the so-called “scams.”  Every single job you find on your search will be 100% legit and offers you the opportunity to work from home.  It’s as easy as that.

The Biggest Job Portal Online

FlexJobs is said to be the biggest job portal online, offering more than 50+ job categories, ranging from full-time to even executive positions.  No matter what kind of experience you have, there will be something on this website for you, I can promise you that.

Create a Profile for Job Leads

You can create an easy, quick profile that enables you to be found by prospective employers.  In this profile, you can upload resumes and even work samples to showcase your work.  You can also take a free skills test to show off the skills you already know.  Similar to that of a LinkedIn, it’s a great way for a company to find you while you’re not actively job hunting.

Job Resources Galore

Not only does the website offer a fantastic job portal, but they offer a variety of job resources to help with your job hunt.  From career content to resume reviews, expert skills tests and even one-on-one help, the company is dedicated to helping you find an online dream job.

Expert Company Research

The problem with other job portals is that you can’t find much in terms of the company you’re applying to.  Sure, you can go on to research the company on your own, but it can be hard to trust what you’re reading.  Every company you see posted will be researched by their staff, where you can find information about the company’s history, awards they may have won and even the jobs posted at the time.  You can even read about the types of jobs they often post as well as success stories from current members.

No Ads

Unfortunately, most websites need to post advertisements as a way to survive, including this one!  Some websites bombard you with ads, while some do it more discreetly.  It’s okay to have ads, but it’s not okay to blast them everywhere.  With FlexJobs, you don’t have to worry as you won’t find ads, including the scammy-like “work from home” job postings.

Email Alerts

You don’t always have to log in, either, as the website does a great job sending email alerts any time a job is posted, according to your criteria.

As a FlexJobs member, the company also offers pre-negotiated discounts, up to 50% on some services, such as Dell computers, an Audible account, TurboTax and many more.  If you sign up for the right service, those savings can sometimes offset your monthly fee.

How it Works

After you create an account and your payment is confirmed, you can then access the job search portal, the most popular option, wherein you can either use the advanced job search function or you can search by location, view the newest jobs or even break down your jobs by category, to name a few.  Your menu will look something like this…

I will break down each option below, but let it be known that there’s a lot you can do.

Job Search

To me, the most popular place to start relies on the “advanced job search” feature, which you can find near the job of your screen.

While you can search for jobs using any keyword, I would highly recommend you start with the advanced job search feature as this helps you narrow down your job hunt, finding you an online gig that you qualify for. In using the advanced search, it will look something like this…

You don’t have to use every filter, but if you do decide to sign up, I would at least fill out as much as possible so that your results are catered to you.

In these results, you can filter your results even more if you’re unhappy with the results and/or you want to be even more detailed.

Click on any job of interest and it will tell you a little about the job description, the details as well as contact information as to how you can apply.  You can also view more about the company as FlexJobs conducts research on every company that posts a gig.

Job Categories

The job categories allow you to explore more than 50 categories, all of which I post in the in the screenshot below.

This is quite vague, but if you’re looking for a particular job category, such as graphic design or sales, then it may be a good place to start.

Skills Tests via the Learning Center

Aside from being able to look for work, FlexJobs also offers the opportunity to partake in what is known as FlexJobs skills tests.

In this section, you will find everything from programming languages to operating systems.

This section is completely optional, but it’s a good way to test your knowledge.  I don’t find much importance in these tests as they don’t hold much value, but it could be beneficial if you’re uncertain if you know the topic in depth.

Career Coaching

Another cool feature that FlexJobs offers is a career coaching session, where you can talk one-on-one with a professional to help fine-tune your job hunting skills.

Unfortunately, this feature isn’t free as it will cost you north of $50 for about 30 minutes, but it could help you in your job hunt as this professional will review your resume, help you interview and even help you with your cover letter.

For some, this feature could be worth it, but again, it isn’t necessary.

Research Companies

The “Research Jobs” section  allows you to read more about what the company is about as well as the type of jobs they offer.  For instance, while I was browsing the site, this is what the UnitedHealth Group’s page looked like…

This could come in handy if you had a specific company in mind or maybe you’re even targeting a company to work for as you can view the most current jobs right on the page.

On each page, FlexJobs will mention any awards they have won as well as the type of work they have offered in the past.  You can even scroll down to see any active job postings on the website as of today.

Aside from that information, they also link out to any social media profiles as well as a direct link to the company’s website if you want to learn more.

While most of the companies they do work with are legitimate, some people often want to learn even more about the company they are applying to.  After all, not all companies are created equally, right?

Each of these are self-explanatory, but it can offer even more opportunity if you want to browse around.  Again, I found the most luck with the job search function, but these features can be beneficial, depending on what you’re looking for.

FlexJobs isn’t designed for everyone, but seeing you’re on this website or even landed on this page through a search result, I feel as if you could be a good fit.  However, to play it safe, FlexJobs is designed for the following types of people:

• Anyone who’s interested in working from home or remotely
• Anyone looking for a career-oriented job
• Freelancers
• Anyone looking for a flexible schedule
• Someone looking for a part-time job
• People living in a rural area looking for a job in their career field but are having a hard time finding something local
• Caretakers
• Retirees
• Military spouses

Basically, if you want a job you can work wherever you want, sometimes whenever you want, it’s something to at least consider.   FlexJobs states “it’s for anyone who would appreciate a job that betters fits with their life, not a life that fits with their job.”

What Others Are Saying

As with all of my reviews, I always like to see what other people are talking about online, both good and bad.  Just remember that even the best product can still have poor reviews.  In this section, I went out and scoured the web to see what I could find from previous as well as current users.

The Pros

It screens out the scams, making it very easy to find legitimate work-at-home gigs.

There are a ton of gigs available no matter what your background is.

Tons of flexibility, from full-time to freelancing gigs.

Easy to browse listings and keep in the loop as more are added.

The ability to research a company’s background before you apply.

No ads and even an A+ BBB rating.

It’s going to save you a lot of time if you’re solely looking for remote work.

The Cons

It does have a fee, which can be a turn-off to many.

All job postings are not always exclusive as you can find them elsewhere with a pinch of work.

Some categories/industries don’t have as much success as others.

Some members report the website as being too “cluttered.”

Final Thoughts

In the end, FlexJobs is an awesome opportunity to potentially find a 100% legitimate remote job, no matter what kind of experience you have and/or what you’re looking for.  It’s a 100% legitimate company that is all about no scams.  I can’t say enough good things about it if you’re looking for an online job.

For the price of a pizza, sometimes even less than that, you really don’t have much to lose.  Remember, even if you don’t like what you see, they will refund you with no questions asked as long as you do so in 30 days.  There is no risk on your end.

And, yes, while there are free job portals out there, the “work from home” industry is a whole another animal as you will find a ton of misleading scams on these sites, such as the American Consumer Panels company I wrote about in the past. However, there are some great free FlexJobs alternatives, such as Remote.co and SkipTheDrive.com.  They aren’t the only ones out there.

If you’re in the market for an online job, it’s important to invest in yourself.  For now, create an account and see if they offer you the weekly rate, which will only set you back about $7 for the next seven days.  I would at least start with this before you commit to anything longer.  This can allow you to check out the website in full and see if any job offers pique your interest.  If you’re able to find one, then you can always cancel your account and call it a day.
