In the past, I mentioned more than 22+ apps that help sell your clothes. And, on that list, one app stuck out to me as it worked much differently than the rest as this one does all of the dirty work for you. It requires minimal effort on your part and can earn you some cash if you have clothes in your closet. All you have to do is take a picture and that’s about it, I promise.
Known as Flyp, this app connects you with a network of “Pro Sellers,” who will be more than willing to sell any clothes you have. You just have to take a picture of what you have to sell and these sellers will then bid on your project, letting you know what you may be able to get.
If you have clothes that you feel have value but you don’t want to waste your time listing them yourself, then this may be an app to highly consider.
In this review, I will talk about how the app works, how you can sign up as well as how much you can make.
What Is the Flyp App?
Unlike many selling apps, such as eBay, where you’re responsible for listing your clothes, dealing with a buyer, and then shipping it out, Flyp works much differently.
Instead of worrying about these hassles, Flyp will connect you with what’s known as a Pro Seller. These sellers will help sell your clothes and will effectively bid on a lot you may have to sell. They want to make money helping you sell your clothes. Since you’re both making money, they will do their best to get you top dollar. You will only be responsible for posting what you have to sell and then wait for these sellers to bid on your “lot.” After reviewing your bids, which will include a price estimate, as well as the seller’s commission, you will select one of your choices. It’s entirely up to you who you choose. You don’t need to commit if you don’t want to.
After you ship your items out to these sellers using a prepaid label provided by the company, these pros will help price your items, negotiate with buyers, and ship all of your clothing for you. After your pro receives the funds, you will get paid. In short, they do everything.
The Flyp app is operated by The Selling Company, a privately held firm based in San Francisco, California. According to their mission statement, they wanted to bridge the gap and allow people to cash out on the things they no longer need while empowering independent entrepreneurs to grow their resale businesses. In turn, this results in a sustainable cycle where your items get a second life, you get paid for it and your Pro Seller can make a living doing it.
What Can I Sell?
The app allows you to sell certain brand-name clothing, shoes, and handbags. You can’t sell just any clothing items, however, as there are restrictions. If you do decide to sell and the company accepts your brand, it must be in good condition and come from a smoke and smell-free home. While the clothes don’t need the tags still attached, it must be free and clear of any stains and rips. Simply put, it should be in almost new condition to be considered.
Now, before you get excited and take pictures of every piece of clothing you have, there are some brands the company won’t accept, all of which you can see on the FAQ here. Some of the brands they don’t accept, for instance, include TJ Maxx, Walmart brands, Crocs, Charlotte Russe, and H&M, to name a few. They also won’t accept any non-branded items or items from boutiques. There are many more, which I include in the screenshot below, but they can change at any time. With that being said, be sure to check out that FAQ to see what you can and cannot sell.
As for what’s hot in terms of selling, according to the company, the top things sell at the moment include:
- handbags
- athletic wear
- dresses
- heels
- shirts/blouses
- leggings
- bots
- jackets
- jeans/pants
- sneakers
This can change as seasons/trends continue, but it should at least give you an idea as to what you can sell quickly.
How to Use the Flyp App
To start selling your clothes on the app, you will need to download the app via the App Store for iPhone. At this time, the app is only available for iPhone devices. Signing up is easy and only takes a few minutes to do.
After you create an account and log in, you will want to start taking pictures of any clothes, shoes and/or handbags you have to sell. You’re going to create what’s known as “lot” and Pro Sellers on the app will bid on these pictures. These pictures don’t have to be professional as the sellers will do the selling for you, but it should be close enough so that the seller can see what you’re looking to sell.
Once you’re done and you upload the pictures, it’s now time to wait for the pros to start applying. As mentioned, they will let you know what they think they can get for you as well as what they are going to charge for a commission rate. Since these sellers can set their own rates, the rates and estimates can greatly vary. The cool thing about the app is that you can view the seller’s profile ahead of time to know who you’re working with. On this profile page, you can see their name, a photo, their rating, etc. If you’re ever in doubt, you can ask questions if need be and your potential seller will be happy to answer them.
After you pick out a seller and you’re happy with the price, the Flyp app will provide you with a prepaid shipping label, in which you will slap on a box and ship off to your seller. Then, once your seller receives it, they will sell all of your clothing for you, doing all of the dirty work. This includes taking the pictures, haggling with the buyers, shipping, etc. After the box leaves your home, all you need to do is wait for your payment.
Finally, after an item sells, you can get paid. Flyp makes payments via Venmo, PayPal, the Cash App or Apple Pay. You can also connect your bank account if you choose to do so as well.
What makes Flyp unique is that the seller will split the profits with you rather than charge you a commission. If your seller charges a 50% selling fee, for instance, and your dress sells for $10, then you will get $5 added to your balance.
How Much Can I Make?
How much you can make with the app will greatly depend on the seller you work with. Remember, they get to set the rate and you get to choose who you want to work with. However, according to the company, you can expect to make 50% to 70%+ of the profits.
Remember, this is set by the seller and is after all of the fees the seller incurs, such as the fees charged by the marketplaces they use, the shipping fees, item research, etc.
Simply put, what commission that’s charged is what they will take. There are no hidden fees.
When Do I Get Paid?
As soon as your Pro receives the funds, it can take up to 30 days for the funds to be ready. This can be due to the shipping times, buyer confirmation, etc.
When your payment is ready, your Pro will pay you in the app and your profits will be added to your “balance” tab. You can withdraw at any time using any of the payment methods mentioned prior.
After you confirm the withdrawal, it can take up to three days to appear in your bank account.
From start to finish, it could take up to 90 days to get paid, all depending on what needs to be sold. Keep in mind that this can be much longer if your clothing doesn’t sell. According to the company, most items in a lot will sell in under 90 days.
The Flyp Protection Policy
The cool thing about the Flyp app is that they have a protection policy, which will give you 100% confidence in selling on the app.
What this means is that if any of your items are not sold within 90 days of delivery, your Pro will be able to offer you four options. This includes…
- having the items mailed back to you
- have the item donated on your behalf
- they may make an offer to buy the lot off of you
- reduce the price and extend the selling period
In the case your Pro doesn’t abide by the policy mentioned above, the Protection Team will help you recuperate the full market value of your items.
Make Money as a Pro Seller
Aside from selling your clothes on the app with a Pro Seller and making money, you can also make money as a Pro Seller. This can be a nice opportunity if you like selling items online and don’t mind shipping items out, etc.
I already mentioned it briefly, but as a Pro Seller, it will be your job to sell the clothes for someone who uses the site. The cool thing about Flyp is that they will review each lot before it even goes live so that you don’t have to waste your time sorting through clothes that probably won’t sell. Since the company has strict standards, you can be assured that most of what you sell will actually sell.
As a Pro Seller, there are no upfront costs, you sell on a commission rate that you get to set, and you don’t have to find customers as the app does the work for you. The company does mention that you set a commission rate anywhere between 30% and 60%. Just remember that this rate is all-inclusive, which means you will have to use some of this cash for any fees you incur on other market places.
If you are interested, you can apply on the site via this link to be consider. Once active, you can then apply to sell lots that are active on the site, letting the customer know what you’re willing to charge. You can check out the FAQ for answers to any questions you may have.
What Are Others Saying
As I write this, the app has an outstanding 4.8 out of a 5-star review on the App Store. With more than 375+ ratings, here were some of the highlights I found in reading the reviews:
- an easy and stress-free selling process
- can get more money than your local clothing stores that buy clothes
- great service from the Pro Sellers
Most of what I read was positive, with a few negative experiences. But, from what I read, most were due to users not following the directions as to what can’t be sold on the app. Generally, as long as you’re aware of what you can sell, there shouldn’t be a problem.
Final Thoughts
If you have name-brand clothes that you no longer need and you don’t want to go through the hassle of selling them, then Flyp is absolutely an app to consider. The great thing about it is that you get to choose the seller you’re working with and you can pick out the best commission rate that works for you. It’s an awesome way to estimate what you could make with your clothing lot.
Sure, while you can make more money selling on your own, you won’t have to worry about listing, shipping and dealing with buyers. This can eat up a lot of your time, as you can imagine. Plus, the fees you pay off isn’t as much as you think.
So, before you take your clothes to a donation center or one of those clothing stores that will buy it off you, consider getting a quote on this app before you do. You may be surprised at how much you can get.
To download the app, you can do so via the official website at JoinFlyp.com or at the App Store.
